Either set up your own company and take on the bookkeeping and bureaucracy that comes with it, or ask a friend to invoice through theirs instead. Latvia’s 2021 tax reform made the problem impossible to ignore, and it was clear we weren’t the only ones facing it. Today Abillio is a global invoicing and payments platform for freelancers, contractors, and the businesses that pay them. What started as a workaround for a few freelancers in Riga is now compliant, cross-border payment infrastructure, used by gig platforms and marketplaces to onboard, pay, and stay compliant with contractors across dozens of countries. ### Abillio’s mission The way people work has outpaced the systems built to pay them. Remote work, cross-border teams, and the growing gig economy mean more people earning income outside a traditional employment contract, and more businesses that need to pay them correctly without drowning in admin. Abillio’s mission is to make that simple: freelancers and contractors get paid on time and in compliance, and the businesses paying them don’t have to think about invoicing, tax rules, or cross-border rails to make it happen.
