Scaling a global team is a competitive advantage, but managing contractor payments across different borders, currencies, and tax jurisdictions can quickly become an administrative nightmare.
1. Legal Structure: The Intermediary Model
Abillio acts as an invoicing and payment intermediary. It’s important to distinguish this from an Employer-of-Record (EOR) model.
- Commercial Relationship: The underlying business relationship remains directly between you and your contractor.
- Liability: Abillio does not become the employer and does not assume employment classification risk.
- Our Responsibilities: We generate compliant invoices under our legal entity, collect funds from you, handle global payment rails (including FX), and manage all supporting documentation.
While contractors accept our Terms of Service to access the platform, this functional step does not transfer the commercial ownership of the relationship from you to us.
2. Tax Reporting & “Company-as-a-Service”
A major hurdle in contractor payments is keeping the tax authorities happy. Abillio PRO automates the reporting requirements that usually fall on your finance team:
- Company-as-a-Service: We provide freelancers in the US, EU, and Global South with a “business-in-a-box.” They can invoice you through our legal entity without needing to register a local company or VAT ID themselves.
- DAC7 Reporting (EU): For contractors based in the European Union, we handle the mandatory data collection and reporting of earnings to the relevant tax authorities.
- 1099 Reporting (USA): For your US-based contractors, we manage the documentation required for 1099 reporting, saving your finance team hours of manual work during tax season.
3. Managing Misclassification Risk
Because we are an intermediary and not an EOR, the classification risk remains with the engaging company, similar to any standard independent contractor setup. To help you manage this, we provide operational guardrails:
- Explicit Status: Contractors must explicitly agree they are operating as independent service providers.
- Pattern Monitoring: We review invoice patterns and flag recurring, “salary-like” structures that could indicate a higher classification risk.
- Audit Trail: We maintain a complete documentation trail, ensuring your contractor payments are transparent and traceable for any future audits.
Note: If your business requires a full transfer of labor-law liability, an EOR model would be the appropriate alternative.
4. Documentation & Accounting
Everything in Abillio PRO is structured for total audit traceability. Depending on your accounting setup, you receive:
- Bulk Model: One consolidated monthly invoice from Abillio.
- Individual Model: Specific invoice flows and service agreements for each contractor.
- Transparency: Access to contractor details (VAT/Tax IDs), invoice copies, payment confirmations, and downloadable audit reports.
- Integration: API access is available for companies looking to sync payout data directly with their internal systems.
5. Timeline and Volume
We aim for speed and flexibility, regardless of your company’s size.
- Volume: We have no strict minimums. We work with businesses processing everything from a few thousand dollars to high six-figure volumes monthly.
- The Workflow:
- Funding: You fund the invoice via wire or local rails.
- Processing: Once received, payouts are processed the same day or next business day (GMT+2).
- Receipt: Contractors typically receive funds within 0–2 business days (see countries supported here), depending on the method (Bank, Card, PayPal, Wise, Airtm, etc.).
